 Career Explorations

Registration Now Open!

FCCLA is committed to providing its members with high quality educational resources and options during national meetings.  This year we are pleased to offer career explorations on a limited basis on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Career Explorations are designed to increase career awareness and encourage career investigation for student members.

 

  • Preregistered tickets MUST be picked up at the FCCLA Registration Desk starting Monday, July 5 at 6:30 p.m.  Remaining tickets become available on a first come first served basis.
  •  Students and chaperones must be registered for the conference to attend.
  • Students must be accompanied by a chaperone to participate. 
  • All departures and returns will be from the Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel.  Pickup and drop-off instructions will be provided with confirmation of your Career Exploration registration.  Times listed represent departure and return times. 
  • FCCLA reserves the right to cancel any exploration if the minimum number of participants is not met.  In case of cancellation, advisers will be notified.

Tuesday, July 6, 9:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

“Merchandise Mart Dream Homes Tour”-  CLOSED - Capacity has been filled.

Location: Chicago Merchandise Mart, 15-20 minute walk or $5-$7 cab fare- Group will be departing  and walking together from Hyatt Regency.

 

Description:  A short video will be shown showcasing the designers of the dream homes and their inspirations.  The designers will also discuss details throughout various rooms of the homes.  A tour of the ten design homes will be given.  Additional information regarding the Dream Homes and Merchandise Mart will also be presented.

Wednesday, July 7, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

“Careers in Design” - Register Here for This Event- CLOSED- Capacity has been Filled

Location:  Harrington College of Design, Chicago, 20-30 minutes walk or $5-$7 cab fare- Group will be departing and walking together from the Hyatt Regency.

Description:  An overview of Interior Design, Communication Design and Commercial Photography.  What does it take to become proficient and to work in these fields?  The steps one takes, the cost to get there and what to expect as an entry level graduate. 

Careers that will be presented or discussed: AAS, BFA, and Master’s degrees in Interior Design, BFA in Communication Design, AAS andBFA in Commercial Photography. No shuttle will be provided for participants.

Wednesday, July 7, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

“Exploring the Culture of Hospitality”- CLOSED- Capacity has been filled.

Location:  Kendall College Hospitality Management, Chicago, Shuttle and Continental Breakfast Provided

 

Description:  Hospitality is not just a career, it is a way of life.  This seminar explores the culture of hospitality- the passion for perfection, attention to even the smallest detail, focus on pleasing the most discriminating tastes, the graciousness and the grace, the excitement and the buzz-which makes hospitality so personally and professionally rewarding.  Attendees will look at the various facets of the industry from hotels and restaurants to casinos, clubs, cruises, sports arenas, meetings and events venues, and amusement parks in a career that boasts six-figure incomes and truly cosmopolitan lifestyles.

Careers that will be presented or discussed: Hotel and restaurant management, management of casinos, private clubs and sports and leisure facilities, meeting and event planning, cruise direction and amusement park management.

“Planning and Practicing for Your Career Success” -  CLOSED - Capacity has been filled.

 Location:  Kendall College School of Business, Chicago, Shuttle and Continental Breakfast Provided

Description: In this interactive session, students will learn how to become professionally savvy, globally driven, and services oriented through demonstrations, role plays, and discussions with professionals in various business fields.  Students will interact with faculty, staff, and students from Kendall College, as well as with local entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Careers that will be presented or discussed: Various careers outside manufacturing and within services industries, such as advertising, banking, hospitality, insurance,etc.

“What it takes to be Excellent!”- Register Here for This Event- CLOSED- Capacity has been filled. 

Location:  Kendall College School of Culinary Arts, Chicago, Shuttle and Continental Breakfast Provided

 

Description: Start off the day with an introduction to Kendall College and what it takes to make it

in the world of culinary.  Move on to a game of Sustainability Jeopardy, just like you see on TV. 

Then, break off into 3 groups to discover the many unique career paths in the food industry,

build your basic cooking skills in an exciting demo, and tour Kendall’s culinary campus with

tastings along the way.

 

Careers that will be presented or discussed: Various careers within the food industry, including research and development (R&D), nutrition,  food science, and many more.

“The In’s and Out’s of Teaching” -  CLOSED - Capacity has been filled. 

Location:  Kendall College Early Childhood Education, Chicago, Shuttle and Continental Breakfast Provided

 

Description:  This presentation is geared toward future educators.  What is it that makes teaching so appealing?  Why does anyone want to teach?  What does it take to teach?  These questions, and more, will be addressed at the session.

“Account Services Director” -Register Here for This Event-CANCELLED 

Location:  McCormick Place, Chicago, Shuttle Provided

 

Description:  Account Services Director is the key contact for blocking facility space, fine tuning space needs, negotiating lease pricing and finalizing all other lease items.  If an event is booked through the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, their Sales Team works closely with their McCormick Place Account Services Director on all center information.  In addition, the Account Services Director will gather information from clients that will help all staff understand and serve our client’s needs.  Account Services Director provides clients with specific information about the facility.  Each Director works with the Scheduling and Contracts area to make sure that the client’s licenses reflect the correct space, dates and price.  Scheduling and Contracts will then make certain that the required space is correctly blocked and that each license contains any additional clauses and terms agreed upon.

Location:  Hyatt Regency, Chicago

 

Description:  Includes a tour of facilities with Sales Manager, a presentation by the Human Resources/Careers department, and a presentation by the Operations Manager.

“Tour of the CME Group - Register Here for This Event

Location: CME/Chicago Board of Trade/NYMEX Company, 25-35 min. walk, $5-$10 cab fare- Group will be departing and walking together from the Hyatt Regency.

Description:  A 14-minute introductory film presentation, followed by a tour through the gallery space overlooking two open outcry trading floors housing financial and agricultural commodities futures/options market.
